How to Download and Configure ClamXav Antivirus Version 2.x for Macintosh OS X

Note: While ClamXav is available through the Apple App store, we recommend downloading the software from TERPware.  The ClamXav version downloaded through the Apple App store is limited in functionality.  For more information please go to terpware.umd.edu.

 

Requirements: An Intel based Macintosh running OS 10.5.2 or later, through 10.7 (with the latest updates from Apple installed) with at least 15MB of free disk space.

 

1. Navigate your web browser to the ClamXav Installer page to download the software.

 

2. Click the ClamXav Download Page link to go to the software download page.

 

3. Click on the Downloads tab on the top-left of the screen.

4. Click on the link to download the latest version (the latest version will be toward the top of the list).

5. Save the file to your desktop or download folder.

 

6. Open the file ClamXav_2.x.

 

7. In the window that pops up, drag ClamXav to your Applications folder to install.

8. When complete, open your Applications folder, then double-click to launch ClamXav.app. You may receive a warning message. This is normal - click Open.

9. A couple windows will come up - accept these and click on the Install button.

10. The Install window will appear. Click the Continue button for this window and the next.

11. Agree to the license to continue the installation process, then click Install. You will be asked for your computer's administration password.

 

12. After the installation is complete, you will be asked to click the Open button. Continue to follow the steps to complete the update of your virus definitions. Keep in mind you will need an active Internet connection to complete this final step.
